21st Annual NAACP ACT-SO New Jersey Youth Academic Olympics to be Held Tuesday, April 6, 2010 High School Students of African American descent will compete in academic disciplines including Humanities, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Sciences and Business, for the opportunity to represent the state of New Jersey at the NAACP National ACT-SO Competition.
Newark, New Jersey - On Saturday, April 10th, from 10am until 3pm at Central High School in Newark, the New Jersey State ACT-SO Conference will host its 21st annual State Competition. High School Students who participate in ACT-SO through the state will compete in categories such as Sciences, Entrepreneurship, Original Essay, Dance, Dramatics, Oratory, Music (Instrumental and Vocal), Architecture, Drawing, Filmmaking, Photography, Sculpture and more.
First Place winners, announced on Sunday, April 11 at the Catto School in Camden, New Jersey, will represent the state of New Jersey at the NAACP National Convention held in Kansas City, MO this July.
ACT-SO, often referred to as the "Olympics of the Mind", seeks to promote the following amongst high school students of African-American descent; (1) Positive self-esteem, (2) Positive interaction between our youth and the adult professional community, (3) Positive academic and artistic excellence, and (4) High academic and cultural achievement.
The ACT-SO program is intended to be a learning experience, first and foremost. The focus of a viable and effective local ACT-SO program is on enrichment and mentorship. Students work with ACT-SO mentors who help them develop projects throughout the year. Local ACT-SO programs also provide ACT-SO students with enrichment opportunities, such as workshops, tutorials, and field trips.

About ACT-SO
ACT-SO, a program by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), is an acronym that stands for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. It is a student enrichment program that culminates in a local and national competition where students compete for awards, and prizes totaling over $50,000.
